" Schenectady’s General Electric Realty Plot" Book Release Party
May 7, 2019
Schenectady County Historical Society
32 Washington Ave.
Schenectady, NY 12305
Join us to celebrate the release of "Schenectady’s General Electric Realty Plot", the first book by Schenectady City Historian and Schenectady County Historical Society Trustee, Chris Leonard.
Leonard, a resident of the GE Realty Plot for 5 years, produced this book using photographs from SCHS’ Grems-Doolittle Library, as well as the Efner History Center at City Hall, MiSci, the Special Collections at Union College’s Schaffer Library, and from the personal collections of many friends and neighbors. The book covers the history of the GE Realty Plot from Thomas Edison’s arrival in Schenectady, through the desperate attempts to save the homes in the 1970s. Leonard will take us through the stately homes, unique characters, and revolutionary scientific advancements that have taken place in “the Plot.”
Chris Leonard is a writer and editor by trade and a historian through osmosis. The son of two history professors, Leonard has spent his life reading and researching historical topics. Along with an MA in Writing, Chris has a BS in history from SUNY Albany. Since settling in Schenectady in 2004, he has focused on the history of the city, lecturing on topics including the Erie Canal, professional baseball in Schenectady, the growth of the city, mayors and political figures, Prohibition, and of course, the GE Realty Plot. Leonard was named the historian of the GE Plot in December 2016 and the Historian of the City of Schenectady in February 2019.
Join us for a festive night celebrating the release of this new book! Refreshments will be provided, and Leonard will sign copies of his book, which will be available for sale.
