A Bonded Friendship: Moses and Eliphalet
May 6, 2017 –
Gretchel Hathaway will be presenting on her recently published book, A Bonded Friendship: Moses and Eliphalet. This book tells the story of how two people, an escaped slave and a college president, become close friends in the small bustling city of Schenectady. The relationship between Moses Viney and Eliphalet Nott has been shared by many in our small community and the writing of this historical fiction brings the story to life for a broader audience. Told mainly in first person, the story enfolds of Moses' escape from slavery and the difficulty encountered by Eliphalet to assist Moses in attaining his freedom. The view of the situation from their wives’ perspective and the love stories that evolve will open your eyes to the life and times of these characters living on a college campus in the 1850's.
Gretchel Hathaway, Ph.D. currently serves as the Dean of Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance Officer at Union College (NY).
