SUMMARY:Howlin' at the Moon featuring The Mammals
DESCRIPTION:Howlin’ at the Moon showcases regional music from a variety of genres\, providing an authentic musical experience for both audience and musicians. Music traditions are meant to be fluid and evolving\, and Howlin’ nurtures regional musical talent while providing opportunities for cross-pollination. All in a 1760 Dutch Barn that inspires and reminds us of our place within history! \nWe’re kicking off the 16th season with a performance by The Mammals! The Mammals are folksingers Ruth Ungar\, Mike Merenda\, and a cohort of compelling collaborators who form a touring quintet on the fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, organ\, bass\, and drums. Over the past 20 years they have quietly composed a canon of original songs (“Some of the best songwriting of their generation.” -LA Times) that both reflect our culture and offer a vision of how the world might yet be. “These days we sing about what we’re for over what we’re against\,” says songwriter\, Mike Merenda\, and what they’re for is “nothing short of sublime” according to Americana UK. \nA rough and tumble decade in the 00’s forged The Mammals identity as “subversive acoustic traditionalists” (Boston Globe) or a “party band with a conscience.” Re-emerging in 2017 from a hibernation period during-which the band’s founders explored new songwriting terrain\, The Mammals “don’t suffer from multiple genre syndrome\, they celebrate it as if gleefully aware that the sound barriers separating old-timey music\, vintage pop and contemporary folk are as permeable as cotton” (Washington Post). Their latest album\, Nonet\, “marshalls the defiant spirit needed to heal a damaged world” (No Depression). In 2023 they released a series of singles recorded at their own Humble Abode Music\, as well as issuing bonus material from 2020’s landmark album Nonet. \nRuth is the daughter of legendary fiddler\, Jay Ungar\, composer of the storied “Ashokan Farewell.” You can catch The Mammals semi-annually at The Hoot\, a folk festival they curate and produce at The Ashokan Center in Olivebridge\, NY. \nOpening the night is host Everest Rising\, a tightly-knit quintet influenced by bluegrass\, Americana\, rock\, jazz and more. Together they create progressive acoustic music that is unique\, powerful\, and comfortably familiar. With a wide dynamic range\, Everest Rising’s material spans from heartfelt laments to all out jams\, all executed with instrumental finesse and thoughtful story-telling. As this summer’s host of the Howlin’ at the Moon Concert Series\, Everest Rising aims to support an authentic musical experience for both audience and musicians. \nAdmission is $10 at the door (cash only). Beer and wine available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Wine and Walk: The Stockade Beyond the Pines
DESCRIPTION:We’re kicking off our Wine and Walk Fridays with a colonial-era walking tour that takes us back to a land you may know but a world that’s unrecognizable. In 1661\, Schenectady was founded at the frontier of the colonial world and sat at the crossroads of many competing empires. This tiny town was caught in a delicate balance as various European and Native American powers jostled for control of this area. In this tour we’ll explore the earliest years of our city’s history leading up to the disastrous night in 1690 when it was utterly destroyed. Come see how our city’s story began! \nJoin us for this evening walking tour\, and then choose to stick around the Stockade for a drink at the historic Arthur’s Market. \nThis tour meets at SCHS\, 32 Washington Ave\, Schenectady\, and concludes at Arthur’s Market on N. Ferry Street. \nAll ticket sales are final.

Music traditions are meant to be fluid and evolving\, and Howlin’ nurtures regional musical talent while providing opportunities for cross-pollination. All in a 1760 Dutch Barn that inspires and reminds us of our place within history! \nDressed in black suits\, dark sunglasses and fez\, Big Fez & the Surfmatics claims to have first hit the surf music scene in 1960. Mike was a founding member of Irish group\, The Porters. He also currently plays upright bass with Americana/Country Blues recording artist\, The Red Haired Strangers. He co-founded the Boston-based eclectic acoustic band\, Made In The Shade that performed through the U.S. and Europe. Crick can also be found performing with other popular bands Get Up Jack\, and the Skip Parson’s Riverboat Jazz Band. \nOpening the night is host Everest Rising\, a tightly-knit quintet influenced by bluegrass\, Americana\, rock\, jazz and more. DESCRIPTION:NorthEast Theatre Ensemble presents “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” at Mabee Farm Historic Site\, June 21-30\, 2024. \n  \nWho’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf\nBy Edward Albee\, and Directed by Krysta Dennis\nPerformances at 7:30 PM June 21\, 22\, 28\, 29 and at 2:30 PM June 23 and 30\nTickets are $20 at https://www.simpletix.com/e/whos-afraid-of-virginia-woolf-tickets-172981 \nWho’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf eviscerates the mid-century ideals of the American Dream. SUMMARY:Howlin' at the Moon featuring Goodnight Moonshine
\nGoodnight Moonshine is a guitar and vocal duet\, and a musical marriage in all senses. The duo combines the evocative voice and songwriting of Molly Venter\, known for her sublime singing in the prominent female-vocal-group Red Molly\, with Eben Pariser – who cut his teeth as a street performer in New York City\, playing guttural music of New Orleans with his band Roosevelt Dime. The result is folk music with a depth of improvisation and tonal subtlety usually reserved for jazz. NPR’s Jedd Beaudoin comments: “Pariser’s harmonic sensibilities are wide\, imaginative\, while Venter’s singular voice recalls pre-diva singers who could lay out emotions without melodrama.” \nVenter’s voice\, which can be called both “biker-chick smoky” (New Haven Register)\, and “like silk” (American Songwriter Magazine)\, has taken her career to highlights including Tønder Festival in Denmark\, Kate Wolf Fest in CA\, and multiple placements on television and film. In Goodnight Moonshine she is in full force as a songwriter. Her trance-induced stream-of-consciousness writing style results in compositions that probe the depths of her inner experience. \nStarting as a blues guitarist in his teens\, Pariser’s imagination was quickly captured by classic jazz\, which he studied at the Oberlin Conservatory. “Pariser’s harmonic sensibilities are wide\, imaginative” (NPR)\, and his career has involved singing lead and playing bass with Roosevelt Dime\, playing drums and being musical director of Red Molly – but his love of jazz and improvising is what’s on display in Goodnight Moonshine. \nGuitar and vocal duos are rare and few come to mind\, but the ones that do\, such as Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings\, and The Milk Carton Kids\, have achieved and integration between singular talents in a format that is both genreless and grounded in the commonness of two guitars\, two voices. Goodnight Moonshine is taking their own stab at this unusual and deeply personal approach. Their show is punctuated by songs and banter that openly explore the complexities of their relationship to each other\, the Creator\, birth\, life\, death\, and what happens when\, “the honeymoon ends?” For Venter and Pariser\, It is the way they make space for each other while staying true to themselves that defines this music\, and marriage. \n

SUMMARY:Garden Conservancy Open Days: 50 Shades of Green
DESCRIPTION:Fueling America’s passion for gardens\, the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program annually celebrates the country’s most exciting\, creative\, and innovative private gardens. This year\, SCHS’ shade garden at Brouwer House Creative will be open\, along with several others in Schenectady and Niskayuna. \nSited in New York’s first historic district and hidden behind one of the area’s oldest homes awaits a reimagined and ever-evolving green space designed for pollinators. What started out as just a basic clean up and weeding gig soon evolved into a growing collection of both native species and rare ornamentals with attracting hummingbirds and other pollinators in mind. Visitors should be on the lookout for hummingbirds\, along with various types of butterflies and bees before being smitten by the secret shade garden only revealed by ducking under an archway smothered by our native “Dutchman’s Pipe.” This garden’s estimated size is ¼ acre. \nOpen Days 2024: Saturday\, July 20\nHours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. \nDetails and registration at https://www.gardenconservancy.org/open-days/garden-directory/50-shades-of-green

SUMMARY:Brick House Benefit Concert with Lost Radio Rounders
DESCRIPTION:Longtime veterans of making music at Mabee Farm Historic Site\, Lost Radio Rounders is offering its talent to funds and awareness for the property’s landmark Brick House through an evening of live music. The Brick House dates to 1767 and is currently the focus of a $76\,000 stabilization and restoration project. \nWith a shared interest in the region’s deep roots\, the members of Lost Radio Rounders—guitarist/vocalist Tom Lindsay\, mandolinist Michael Eck\, and banjoist Paul Jossman—wish to aid in the upkeep of the Brick House\, once a dwelling for enslaved people\, as a hallowed artifact and to ensure its legacy as an educational tool. Lost Radio Rounders are New York State’s premier Historic American Music trio\, offering themed programs that fuse information and entertainment in a style reminiscent of classic early 20th century string bands and later brother duets. \nAt the Dutch Barn this July\, they will draw selections from a variety of themed programs appropriate to the era of the Brick House\, including Mohawk Valley chestnuts from “Songs of Our Empire State\,” tunes from “American Favorite Ballads” and spirituals and Underground Railroad anthems from “The Gospel Train.” \nMark & Jill will open the evening\, prior to collaborating with Lost Radio Rounders on select numbers. New York Blues Hall of Fame inductee Mark Tolstrup and sultry Texas singer Jill Burnham come together where the Delta meets the Rio Grande. Winners of the 2022 Eddies Award\nfor “Blues Artist of the Year\,” the duo also participated as finalists in the 2022 International Blues Challenge in Memphis\, Tenn. \nDonations will be accepted at the performance.
