Onondaga artist Chris Thomas is one of this generation’s most celebrated smoke dancers\, recognized for the beauty and fluidity of his steps. He is also an inspiring educator who uses performance to teach about Haudenosaunee culture and history\, from the public schools to the festival stage. \nThe Haudenosaunee Confederacy is made up of the Onondaga\, Mohawk\, Oneida\, Cayuga\, Seneca\, and Tuscarora nations in what is now central and Upstate New York. In pre-colonial times\, these nations forged a powerful sociopolitical alliance based upon a prophetic agreement called Great Law of Peace; their confederacy later served as a major inspiration for the authors of the U.S. Constitution. While European colonizers called them Iroquois\, their own name is Haudenosaunee\, which means “People of the Longhouse.” \nJust as the longhouse dwelling has a public face and a private interior\, Haudenosaunee dance has both public and private forms. The ceremonial dances have spiritual significance\, and thus are reserved for members of the tribal community. However celebratory “social” dances\, like the Rabbit and Old Moccasin dances\, have always been performed for and even with guests in public settings with the accompaniment of singing and drumming. Many of these social dances have\, in turn\, developed competition forms. The Smoke Dance is a newer\, competition dance that evolved in the mid-20th century. Some say its swooping arm movements mimic clearing out smoke from the longhouse. Others believe it is rooted in the ceremonial War Dance\, performed over a steadily intensifying drumbeat to challenge the spinning dancers. \nChris Thomas was introduced to the power of dance in the most traditional of ways: he remembers the joy he felt as a young child\, walking with his aunt\, Eileen Thomas\, down the road to the Onondaga longhouse\, where he would be mesmerized by the dancers’ footwork. When he was a teenager\, his stepfather Bill Crouse brought him to weekend shows and powwows\, where Thomas began to make a name for himself as a competition dancer. Crouse\, who is Seneca\, also taught Thomas to sing; to this day many of the songs he presents are in Seneca\, which is closely related to his mother tongue\, Onondaga. \nAs Thomas points out now\, traditional Haudenosaunee dance isn’t taught\, and children are never pressured to join in. Each aspiring dancer learns by watching and participating\, eventually building their own style within the dynamic framework of traditional dance vocabulary\, costume\, and singing. Chris Thomas & His Smoke Dancers are a multigenerational ensemble featuring talented performers at varying points in this journey\, from Thomas’s 10-year-old daughter Awksanah to his longtime friend Wesley Halsey\, a powerful singer and dancer with a wealth of knowledge of Haudenosaunee history and tradition. All aspects of the dance are culturally and artistically linked\, with the performers and their families making their own dance regalia\, rattles\, and drums. Together they present an exhilarating introduction to Haudenosaunee history and culture through the grace and symbolism of traditional dance. \nThis event will be held outside\, so please dress accordingly and feel free to bring a chair or blanket. \nThis program is made possible by NYSCA\, New York State Council on the Arts. \n  URL:https://schenectadyhistorical.org/event/smokedancers/ ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://schenectadyhistorical.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/2019-07-08T13-35-37_Chris-Thomas-1.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240511T140000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240511T170000 DTSTAMP:20240328T195845 CREATED:20230404T130331Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240314T201235Z UID:28343-1715436000-1715446800@schenectadyhistorical.org SUMMARY:Secret Stockade Saturdays DESCRIPTION:The Stockade comes to life on this behind-the-scenes journey through the neighborhood. The concert series is hosted and presented by the Schenectady County Historical Society and Everest Rising at the Mabee Farm Historic Site. It provides an authentic musical experience for both audience and musicians. Music traditions are meant to be fluid and evolving — this concert series nurtures local and regional musical talent while providing opportunities for cross-pollination and to share musical ideas\, all in a 1760 Dutch Barn that inspires and reminds us of our place within history. Admission is $10 at the door (cash only). Beer and wine available for purchase. \nWe’re kicking off the 16th season with a performance by The Mammals! The Mammals are folksingers Ruth Ungar\, Mike Merenda\, and a cohort of compelling collaborators who form a touring quintet on the fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, organ\, bass\, and drums. Over the past 20 years they have quietly composed a canon of original songs (“Some of the best songwriting of their generation.” -LA Times) that both reflect our culture and offer a vision of how the world might yet be. “These days we sing about what we’re for over what we’re against\,” says songwriter\, Mike Merenda\, and what they’re for is “nothing short of sublime” according to Americana UK. \nThe Mammals are folksingers Ruth Ungar\, Mike Merenda\, and a cohort of compelling collaborators who form a touring quintet on the fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, organ\, bass\, and drums. Their latest album\, Nonet\, “marshalls the defiant spirit needed to heal a damaged world” (No Depression). In 2023 they released a series of singles recorded at their own Humble Abode Music\, as well as issuing bonus material from 2020’s landmark album Nonet. \nRuth is the daughter of legendary fiddler\, Jay Ungar\, composer of the storied “Ashokan Farewell.” You can catch The Mammals semi-annually at The Hoot\, a folk festival they curate and produce at The Ashokan Center in Olivebridge\, NY. \n“Hailed by many as Americana trailblazers and exuding togetherness on stage\, [The Mammals] are also gently-mannered activists with well-crafted songs that successfully ask potent questions and raise issues to probe how we can improve the planet. They deliver their material persuasively and in an eloquent manner with enjoyment of their music underpinning the approach overall. The music is the motivator throughout.” \n“In the vanguard of today’s vibrant folk revival” – PopMatters \n“One of New York State’s finest treasures.” – Americana UK \n“Some of the best folk-rock music you will ever hear.” – TapeOp \n“Some of the best songwriting of their generation.” – LA Times \n“These two will shatter any preconceived stereotypical notions of what it means to be a folk musician.” – Coastal Journal \n“Nonet marshals the defiant spirit needed to heal a damaged world” – No Depression \n“The Mammals tell stories that are at once topical and timeless\, bearing a message of hope and empowerment with a modern string-band sound.” – Freshgrass Festival \nOpening the night is Everest Rising\, a tightly-knit quintet influenced by bluegrass\, Americana\, rock\, jazz and more. Together they create progressive acoustic music that is unique\, powerful\, and comfortably familiar. With a wide dynamic range\, Everest Rising’s material spans from heartfelt laments to all out jams\, all executed with instrumental finesse and thoughtful story-telling. In 1661\, Schenectady was founded at the frontier of the colonial world and sat at the crossroads of many competing empires. This tiny town was caught in a delicate balance as various European and Native American powers jostled for control of this area. In this tour we’ll explore the earliest years of our city’s history leading up to the disastrous night in 1690 when it was utterly destroyed. Come see how our city’s story began! \nJoin us for this evening walking tour\, and then choose to stick around the Stockade for a drink at the historic Arthur’s Market. \nThis tour meets at SCHS\, 32 Washington Ave\, Schenectady\, and concludes at Arthur’s Market on N. Ferry Street. \nAll ticket sales are final.  URL:https://schenectadyhistorical.org/event/pines24/ ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://schenectadyhistorical.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/179922876_10158272342438348_7725352097110660589_n.jpeg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240619T000000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240619T235959 DTSTAMP:20240328T195845 CREATED:20231024T214226Z LAST-MODIFIED:20231210T160943Z UID:25028-1718755200-1718841599@schenectadyhistorical.org SUMMARY:All sites closed DESCRIPTION:All SCHS sites will be closed on the following holidays in 2024: \nNew Years Day\nMLK Day: January 15\nMemorial Day: May 27\nJuly 4\nJuneteenth: June 19\nLabor Day: September 2\nThanksgiving Weekend: November 28-30\nChristmas Eve\nChristmas Day\nNew Years Eve \n  \n  \n  URL:https://schenectadyhistorical.org/event/closed24/2024-06-19/ ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://schenectadyhistorical.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/SCHS-closed.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240620T190000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240620T210000 DTSTAMP:20240328T195845 CREATED:20240216T210229Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240216T210618Z UID:27624-1718910000-1718917200@schenectadyhistorical.org SUMMARY:Howlin' at the Moon featuring Big Fez and the Surfmatics DESCRIPTION:Howlin’ at the Moon showcases regional music from a variety of genres including Americana\, indie\, bluegrass\, surf\, and folk.
