DESCRIPTION:Our very own Brouwer House gardens will be featured on this year’s Stockade Association Art and Nature Garden Tour. Schenectady’s oldest home\, the Brouwer House is a vibrant centerpiece of Schenectady city culture\, filled with authentic character. The 1730s home is the only colonial-era Schenectady house open to the public\, and possesses evocative\, walled gardens. \nCornell Master Gardener Christopher Kirksey has spent the last two years working in the Brouwer House’s extensive shade gardens\, creating a blossoming gem in the city’s historic center. His work with native and rare plants and flowers is sure to dazzle and delight on the Tour. \nElsewhere on the tour\, you can stroll the charming historic neighborhood and be welcomed into private gardens normally hidden from public view. The “Art” will feature works by artists from Living Resources‘ Carriage House Art Center\, individually curated to complement “Nature” in each unique garden and public space. SUMMARY:Unveiled: Historic Wedding Dresses from the NYS Museum
DESCRIPTION:$5/person\, free for members. Advance tickets not required.\n\nA wedding dress is not any old dress. It is an expression of the bride-to-be’s identity\, their hopes and their dreams. The New York State Museum has a wonderful representation of wedding gowns\, demonstrating the changes of this sacred ritual throughout our history. By identifying the wearers of these garments\, we can place them in the context of their era\, and gain a better understanding of our community and its changes across time. In this program\, NYSM curator\, Connie Frisbee Houde\, will examine a selection of this collection. Come walk down the aisle of history and gain a peek into the closets of the NYSM’s clothing collection.\n\nConnie Frisbee Houde is the curator of the NYSM’s clothing and textile collection. She has worked in the museum field since graduating with her master’s degree in the early 1970’s specializing in the identification\, care\, handling and exhibiting of period clothing and textiles. She began her career as the director of Historic Cherry Hill culminating in an exhibition\, Not Just Another Pretty Dress held at the Albany Institute of History and Art. Working as a consultant\, Connie has assisted many museums across New York State identify and care for their clothing collections and led numerous workshops in the care and handling of our precious textile heirlooms. She has been at the New York State museum for the past 15 years.

SUMMARY:"Redesigning Fashion" Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Looking to expand your literary horizons this summer? Join SCHS for a moderated book club series focused on our current exhibit\, “Redesigning Fashion: Transgression and Identity in Women’s Historic Dress.” The exhibit explores the historical importance of women’s clothing and fashion in the expression of cultural values and the creation of identity\, and examines how those ideals change over time. Through novels and memoirs\, we’ll examine some of the themes present in the exhibit such as gender\, sexuality\, women’s work\, and women’s roles in society. Co-moderated by Curator Suzy Fout and Librarian Marietta Carr. \nThe book club will meet biweekly at SCHS on Tuesdays at 6pm\, running September 22 through November 17. Books and other materials will be provided. Guests will help us pick the remainder of our apples\, and press them into cider. We’ll discuss how this famous fruit was an indispensable resource for the Mabees. We have examined how the past affects our present\, and how fashion plays a role in creating identity. In her presentation Fatima will take us from the present to the future of fashion in the Capital Region.\n\nFatima Bey is a Dressmaker and Master seamstress from the capital region\, specializing in bridal wear and alterations. She has earned several national and international awards for her wedding gown sewing. In addition to her 20+ year career in the bridal industry\, Fatima has taught sewing on all levels for over 10 years. For the past 5 years\, Fatima has served as an advisor for the Fashion Edition Institute\, a Capital Region based organization which provides fashion professionals and entrepreneurs with career and business development coaching and mentoring.\n\nSaturday\, October 16th @ 2pm\n32 Washington Ave\n$5/person\, free for members

On Wednesdays\, you will find not only Sweet Sprig goodies but some treasures by other talented artisans\, including Sizz Handmade’s beautiful Chakra weaving kits\, as well as Sharon LaFera’s whimsical children’s toys made from hand-dyed and hand-spun wool.

A costumed guide from the 1600s will lead us through the house\, which is decorated for the season. He’ll delve into the histories and mysteries of the Mabee Farm\, and give us a taste of what life was like for settlers living on the edge of the wilderness.
