Our Schenectady kayak tour takes you from the modern Mohawk Harbor to the site of our city’s ancient port. In nearby Waterford\, history lives at the meeting of New York’s two great waterways! The town of Waterford has long been a vital crossroads for the people of this area. Our Waterford tour takes you between picturesque islands and through the grand locks of the Erie Canal. Along both routes\, our expert guide will regale you with the history of the area. \nPre-registration required. Guests will be provided with a kayak\, life vest\, and paddle. Guests should be prepared to paddle for about two hours. There are no bathrooms at either site. DESCRIPTION:The Stockade comes to life on this behind-the-scenes journey through the neighborhood. A national historic district\, the Stockade is alive with the sights and sounds of a vibrant\, ever-changing neighborhood. Walk its storied streets\, meet local characters\, and learn its legends and lore as we journey across history. \nTickets are $25\, include museum admission\, a guided neighborhood tour\, exclusive access to two Stockade homes and gardens\, and coffee and a treat at Arthur’s Market. This tour lasts approximately three hours\, and is offered — by reservation– on the second Saturday of the month in warm months. The tour involves about 1 mile of walking on sometimes uneven sidewalks. It meets at the Schenectady Historical Museum at 32 Washington Ave\, Schenectady NY 12305. SUMMARY:Howlin' at the Moon featuring Goodnight Moonshine
DESCRIPTION:Howlin’ at the Moon showcases regional music from a variety of genres\, providing an authentic musical experience for both audience and musicians. Music traditions are meant to be fluid and evolving\, and Howlin’ nurtures regional musical talent while providing opportunities for cross-pollination. All in a 1760 Dutch Barn that inspires and reminds us of our place within history! \nGoodnight Moonshine is a guitar and vocal duet\, and a musical marriage in all senses. The duo combines the evocative voice and songwriting of Molly Venter\, known for her sublime singing in the prominent female-vocal-group Red Molly\, with Eben Pariser – who cut his teeth as a street performer in New York City\, playing guttural music of New Orleans with his band Roosevelt Dime. The result is folk music with a depth of improvisation and tonal subtlety usually reserved for jazz. NPR’s Jedd Beaudoin comments: “Pariser’s harmonic sensibilities are wide\, imaginative\, while Venter’s singular voice recalls pre-diva singers who could lay out emotions without melodrama.” \nVenter’s voice\, which can be called both “biker-chick smoky” (New Haven Register)\, and “like silk” (American Songwriter Magazine)\, has taken her career to highlights including Tønder Festival in Denmark\, Kate Wolf Fest in CA\, and multiple placements on television and film. In Goodnight Moonshine she is in full force as a songwriter. Her trance-induced stream-of-consciousness writing style results in compositions that probe the depths of her inner experience. \nStarting as a blues guitarist in his teens\, Pariser’s imagination was quickly captured by classic jazz\, which he studied at the Oberlin Conservatory. “Pariser’s harmonic sensibilities are wide\, imaginative” (NPR)\, and his career has involved singing lead and playing bass with Roosevelt Dime\, playing drums and being musical director of Red Molly – but his love of jazz and improvising is what’s on display in Goodnight Moonshine. \nGuitar and vocal duos are rare and few come to mind\, but the ones that do\, such as Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings\, and The Milk Carton Kids\, have achieved and integration between singular talents in a format that is both genreless and grounded in the commonness of two guitars\, two voices. Goodnight Moonshine is taking their own stab at this unusual and deeply personal approach. Their show is punctuated by songs and banter that openly explore the complexities of their relationship to each other\, the Creator\, birth\, life\, death\, and what happens when\, “the honeymoon ends?” For Venter and Pariser\, It is the way they make space for each other while staying true to themselves that defines this music\, and marriage. \nOpening the night is host Everest Rising\, a tightly-knit quintet influenced by bluegrass\, Americana\, rock\, jazz and more. Together they create progressive acoustic music that is unique\, powerful\, and comfortably familiar. With a wide dynamic range\, Everest Rising’s material spans from heartfelt laments to all out jams\, all executed with instrumental finesse and thoughtful story-telling. DESCRIPTION:Fueling America’s passion for gardens\, the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program annually celebrates the country’s most exciting\, creative\, and innovative private gardens. This year\, SCHS’ shade garden at Brouwer House Creative will be open\, along with several others in Schenectady and Niskayuna. \nSited in New York’s first historic district and hidden behind one of the area’s oldest homes awaits a reimagined and ever-evolving green space designed for pollinators. What started out as just a basic clean up and weeding gig soon evolved into a growing collection of both native species and rare ornamentals with attracting hummingbirds and other pollinators in mind. DESCRIPTION:Longtime veterans of making music at Mabee Farm Historic Site\, Lost Radio Rounders is offering its talent to funds and awareness for the property’s landmark Brick House through an evening of live music. The Brick House dates to 1767 and is currently the focus of a $76\,000 stabilization and restoration project. \nWith a shared interest in the region’s deep roots\, the members of Lost Radio Rounders—guitarist/vocalist Tom Lindsay\, mandolinist Michael Eck\, and banjoist Paul Jossman—wish to aid in the upkeep of the Brick House\, once a dwelling for enslaved people\, as a hallowed artifact and to ensure its legacy as an educational tool. Lost Radio Rounders are New York State’s premier Historic American Music trio\, offering themed programs that fuse information and entertainment in a style reminiscent of classic early 20th century string bands and later brother duets. \nAt the Dutch Barn this July\, they will draw selections from a variety of themed programs appropriate to the era of the Brick House\, including Mohawk Valley chestnuts from “Songs of Our Empire State\,” tunes from “American Favorite Ballads” and spirituals and Underground Railroad anthems from “The Gospel Train.” \nMark & Jill will open the evening\, prior to collaborating with Lost Radio Rounders on select numbers. New York Blues Hall of Fame inductee Mark Tolstrup and sultry Texas singer Jill Burnham come together where the Delta meets the Rio Grande. Winners of the 2022 Eddies Award\nfor “Blues Artist of the Year\,” the duo also participated as finalists in the 2022 International Blues Challenge in Memphis\, Tenn. \nDonations will be accepted at the performance.

A national historic district\, the Stockade is alive with the sights and sounds of a vibrant\, ever-changing neighborhood. Walk its storied streets\, meet local characters\, and learn its legends and lore as we journey across history. \nTickets are $25\, include museum admission\, a guided neighborhood tour\, exclusive access to two Stockade homes and gardens\, and coffee and a treat at Arthur’s Market. This tour lasts approximately three hours\, and is offered — by reservation– on the second Saturday of the month in warm months. The tour involves about 1 mile of walking on sometimes uneven sidewalks. It meets at the Schenectady Historical Museum at 32 Washington Ave\, Schenectady NY 12305. All in a 1760 Dutch Barn that inspires and reminds us of our place within history! \nCarolyn Shapiro is an award-winning old-time banjo player and songwriter from the Southern Adirondacks whose sound is rooted in the old songs of Appalachia. Blending her sultry flavor with a traditional style\, Carolyn creates honest music that feeds the soul like a good home-cooked meal. She writes songs inspired by the world around her with a unique voice that will stop you in your tracks. \nIn 2022 Carolyn was named Folk Artist of the Year at the Capital Region Thomas Edison Music Awards after the release of her debut album “Where I’m Supposed to Be.” Her second album “Take it Easy” was released on February 2nd\, 2024. This 6-song EP is about learning to take care of yourself and finding joy in a world that is crumbling around you. DESCRIPTION:This year\, the popular Mohawk river paddling tours return to both Schenectady and Waterford. For centuries\, Schenectady’s history has revolved around the mighty Mohawk River. Our Schenectady kayak tour takes you from the modern Mohawk Harbor to the site of our city’s ancient port. In nearby Waterford\, history lives at the meeting of New York’s two great waterways! The town of Waterford has long been a vital crossroads for the people of this area. Our Waterford tour takes you between picturesque islands and through the grand locks of the Erie Canal. Along both routes\, our expert guide will regale you with the history of the area. \nPre-registration required. Guests will be provided with a kayak\, life vest\, and paddle. Guests should be prepared to paddle for about two hours. There are no bathrooms at either site. Due to safety restrictions\, you may not bring your own kayak. \n**All ticket sales are final.
