SUMMARY:A Stockade Tea with Sylvie Briber
DESCRIPTION:We’re kicking off another great season of Stockade adventures with a very special springtime tea! Our good friend Sylvie Briber will be our host\, as she shares some of her favorite tales from the neighborhood. Sylvie’s heart was taken when she first stepped inside the Stockade while on a childhood school trip\, and her dream of living in the Stockade came true in 1995 when she moved to 23 Washington Avenue\, across from the Historical Society. Inspired by a mysterious inscription in her front window\, Sylvie began a research journey at the SCHS library\, uncovering some delightful anecdotes. The result is her book\, “The Inscription in the Window.” \nThis program is free\, however registration is required as space is very limited. We cannot accept walk-ins for this program.

SUMMARY:Chris Thomas and his Smoke Dancers: A Haudenosaunee Social Dance
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exhilarating look at Haudenosaunee history and culture through the grace and symbolism of traditional dance. \nHighlighted by lightning footwork that seems to float on air\, the Smoke Dance of the Haudenosaunee Nation is the most dynamic and popular competition dance at powwows across the Northeast. Onondaga artist Chris Thomas is one of this generation’s most celebrated smoke dancers\, recognized for the beauty and fluidity of his steps. He is also an inspiring educator who uses performance to teach about Haudenosaunee culture and history\, from the public schools to the festival stage. \nThe Haudenosaunee Confederacy is made up of the Onondaga\, Mohawk\, Oneida\, Cayuga\, Seneca\, and Tuscarora nations in what is now central and Upstate New York. In pre-colonial times\, these nations forged a powerful sociopolitical alliance based upon a prophetic agreement called Great Law of Peace; their confederacy later served as a major inspiration for the authors of the U.S. Constitution. While European colonizers called them Iroquois\, their own name is Haudenosaunee\, which means “People of the Longhouse.” \nJust as the longhouse dwelling has a public face and a private interior\, Haudenosaunee dance has both public and private forms. The ceremonial dances have spiritual significance\, and thus are reserved for members of the tribal community. However celebratory “social” dances\, like the Rabbit and Old Moccasin dances\, have always been performed for and even with guests in public settings with the accompaniment of singing and drumming. Many of these social dances have\, in turn\, developed competition forms. The Smoke Dance is a newer\, competition dance that evolved in the mid-20th century. Some say its swooping arm movements mimic clearing out smoke from the longhouse. Others believe it is rooted in the ceremonial War Dance\, performed over a steadily intensifying drumbeat to challenge the spinning dancers. \nChris Thomas was introduced to the power of dance in the most traditional of ways: he remembers the joy he felt as a young child\, walking with his aunt\, Eileen Thomas\, down the road to the Onondaga longhouse\, where he would be mesmerized by the dancers’ footwork. When he was a teenager\, his stepfather Bill Crouse brought him to weekend shows and powwows\, where Thomas began to make a name for himself as a competition dancer. Crouse\, who is Seneca\, also taught Thomas to sing; to this day many of the songs he presents are in Seneca\, which is closely related to his mother tongue\, Onondaga. \nAs Thomas points out now\, traditional Haudenosaunee dance isn’t taught\, and children are never pressured to join in. Each aspiring dancer learns by watching and participating\, eventually building their own style within the dynamic framework of traditional dance vocabulary\, costume\, and singing. Chris Thomas & His Smoke Dancers are a multigenerational ensemble featuring talented performers at varying points in this journey\, from Thomas’s 10-year-old daughter Awksanah to his longtime friend Wesley Halsey\, a powerful singer and dancer with a wealth of knowledge of Haudenosaunee history and tradition. All aspects of the dance are culturally and artistically linked\, with the performers and their families making their own dance regalia\, rattles\, and drums. Together they present an exhilarating introduction to Haudenosaunee history and culture through the grace and symbolism of traditional dance. \nThis event will be held outside\, so please dress accordingly and feel free to bring a chair or blanket. All ticket sales final. \nThis program is made possible by NYSCA\, New York State Council on the Arts. \n

SUMMARY:Howlin' at the Moon featuring The Mammals
DESCRIPTION:Howlin’ at the Moon showcases regional music from a variety of genres\, providing an authentic musical experience for both audience and musicians. Music traditions are meant to be fluid and evolving\, and Howlin’ nurtures regional musical talent while providing opportunities for cross-pollination. All in a 1760 Dutch Barn that inspires and reminds us of our place within history! \nWe’re kicking off the 16th season with a performance by The Mammals! The Mammals are folksingers Ruth Ungar\, Mike Merenda\, and a cohort of compelling collaborators who form a touring quintet on the fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, organ\, bass\, and drums. Over the past 20 years they have quietly composed a canon of original songs (“Some of the best songwriting of their generation.” -LA Times) that both reflect our culture and offer a vision of how the world might yet be. “These days we sing about what we’re for over what we’re against\,” says songwriter\, Mike Merenda\, and what they’re for is “nothing short of sublime” according to Americana UK. \nA rough and tumble decade in the 00’s forged The Mammals identity as “subversive acoustic traditionalists” (Boston Globe) or a “party band with a conscience.” Re-emerging in 2017 from a hibernation period during-which the band’s founders explored new songwriting terrain\, The Mammals “don’t suffer from multiple genre syndrome\, they celebrate it as if gleefully aware that the sound barriers separating old-timey music\, vintage pop and contemporary folk are as permeable as cotton” (Washington Post). Their latest album\, Nonet\, “marshalls the defiant spirit needed to heal a damaged world” (No Depression). In 2023 they released a series of singles recorded at their own Humble Abode Music\, as well as issuing bonus material from 2020’s landmark album Nonet. \nRuth is the daughter of legendary fiddler\, Jay Ungar\, composer of the storied “Ashokan Farewell.” You can catch The Mammals semi-annually at The Hoot\, a folk festival they curate and produce at The Ashokan Center in Olivebridge\, NY. \nOpening the night is host Everest Rising\, a tightly-knit quintet influenced by bluegrass\, Americana\, rock\, jazz and more. Together they create progressive acoustic music that is unique\, powerful\, and comfortably familiar. With a wide dynamic range\, Everest Rising’s material spans from heartfelt laments to all out jams\, all executed with instrumental finesse and thoughtful story-telling. As this summer’s host of the Howlin’ at the Moon Concert Series\, Everest Rising aims to support an authentic musical experience for both audience and musicians. \nAdmission is $10 at the door (cash only). Beer and wine available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Wine and Walk: The Stockade Beyond the Pines
DESCRIPTION:We’re kicking off our Wine and Walk Fridays with a colonial-era walking tour that takes us back to a land you may know but a world that’s unrecognizable. In 1661\, Schenectady was founded at the frontier of the colonial world and sat at the crossroads of many competing empires. This tiny town was caught in a delicate balance as various European and Native American powers jostled for control of this area. In this tour we’ll explore the earliest years of our city’s history leading up to the disastrous night in 1690 when it was utterly destroyed. Come see how our city’s story began! \nJoin us for this evening walking tour\, and then choose to stick around the Stockade for a drink at the historic Arthur’s Market. \nThis tour meets at SCHS\, 32 Washington Ave\, Schenectady\, and concludes at Arthur’s Market on N. Ferry Street. \nAll ticket sales are final.

SUMMARY:Howlin' at the Moon featuring Big Fez and the Surfmatics
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the heat\, this concert will take place in the Education Center where there is A/C** \n  \nHowlin’ at the Moon showcases regional music from a variety of genres\, providing an authentic musical experience for both audience and musicians. Music traditions are meant to be fluid and evolving\, and Howlin’ nurtures regional musical talent while providing opportunities for cross-pollination. All in a 1760 Dutch Barn that inspires and reminds us of our place within history! \nDressed in black suits\, dark sunglasses and fez\, Big Fez & the Surfmatics claims to have first hit the surf music scene in 1960. Due to musical differences\, the band broke up in 1966\, and has re-formed to bring the sound of the surf into the 21st century. \nIn real life\, Johnny Fez is John Haggerty (6 and 12 string electric guitar and vocals). John has spent over 20 years touring the United States and Ireland in one of America’s top Irish rock bands\, Hair of the Dog (Billboard Magazine has called them “one of Irish music’s biggest sellers”). During his off hours from Big Fez you can find him performing with his new Irish band Get Up Jack. \nJB Fez is John “JB” Guay (drums\, percussion and vocals). JB spent the early 80’s touring the Northeast and Canada with the classic rock/original band Bad Habit. JB later played in Oz\, a New York- based wedding and party band\, and most recently played with classic rock band Hung Jury. \nMikey Fez is Mike McLean (bass and vocals) actor /musician. Mike was a founding member of Irish group\, The Porters. He also currently plays upright bass with Americana/Country Blues recording artist\, The Red Haired Strangers. Mike’s acting credits include the movie “Ironweed” (with Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep) as well as auditioned for the New York City Opera Company. \nKnickerbocker Fez is Crick Diefendorf (guitar\,steel drums and vocals). Crick is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music\, and has been a professional musician and music educator since 1987. Crick is proficient in all styles of American popular music (jazz\, country\, rock and R&B) and well versed in African\, Latin\, Asian and European music. He co-founded the Boston-based eclectic acoustic band\, Made In The Shade that performed through the U.S. and Europe. Crick can also be found performing with other popular bands Get Up Jack\, and the Skip Parson’s Riverboat Jazz Band. \n

SUMMARY:NorthEast Theatre Ensemble presents: "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
DESCRIPTION:NorthEast Theatre Ensemble presents “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” at Mabee Farm Historic Site\, June 21-30\, 2024. \n  \nWho’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf\nBy Edward Albee\, and Directed by Krysta Dennis\nPerformances at 7:30 PM June 21\, 22\, 28\, 29 and at 2:30 PM June 23 and 30\nTickets are $20 at https://www.simpletix.com/e/whos-afraid-of-virginia-woolf-tickets-172981 \nWho’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf eviscerates the mid-century ideals of the American Dream. George and Martha\, who are disappointed by each other\, by life\, marriage\, and academia\, perform a disturbing charade that slowly envelopes their young guests Nick and Honey over the course of an alcohol-fueled evening. In Albee’s play\, truth is relative\, and the niceties of polite society are dispensed with as an alcohol induced haze blurs the distinction between truth and illusion. As the evening reaches fever pitch\, illusion must be exorcized\, but at what cost? \nNorthEast Theatre Ensemble presents Edward Albee’s incisive examination of this volatile relationship in the round at Mabee Farm. Like their guests Nick and Honey\, the audience will experience George and Martha’s increasingly dangerous fun and games from close at hand. \nThe cast includes Janet Kimlicko as Martha\, Dennis Schebetta as George\, Suzanna Bornn as Honey\, and Jordan Bray as Nick. The production is directed by Krysta Dennis\, assistant directed by Suzanna Bornn\, with fight choreography from Molly Waters\, stage managed by Conor Kimlicko\, assistant stage management by Britt McFadden.
