SUMMARY:Walking Tour: The Stockade Beyond the Pines
DESCRIPTION:This walking tour takes us back to a land you may know but a world that’s unrecognizable. In 1661\, Schenectady was founded at the frontier of the colonial world and sat at the crossroads of many competing empires. This tiny town was caught in a delicate balance as various European and Native American powers jostled for control of this area. In this tour we’ll explore the earliest years of our city’s history leading up to the disastrous night in 1690 when it was utterly destroyed. Come see how our city’s story began! \nThis tour meets at SCHS\, 32 Washington Ave\, Schenectady. \nAll ticket sales are final.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: "The City Authentic" with Prof. David Banks
DESCRIPTION:Join author David A. Banks for a discussion of and reception for his new book The City Authentic: How the Attention Economy Builds Urban America. After a presentation and Q+A\, we’ll enjoy cocktails on the lawn of SCHS. \nThis is the first book to explain how and why cities borrow the tactics and strategies of reality tv stars and social media influencers and why it works. Blending insightful analysis with pop culture\, this engaging study of New York State’s Capital Region is an accessible glimpse into the social phenomena that influence contemporary cities. The rising economic fortunes of cities in the Rust Belt\, Banks argues\, are due in part to the markers of its previous decay—which translate into signs of urban authenticity on the internet. The City Authentic unpacks the odd connection between digital media and derelict buildings\, the consequences of how we think about industry and place\, and the political processes that have enabled a new paradigm in urban planning. Mixing urban sociology with media and cultural studies\, Banks offers a lively account of how urban life and development are changing in the twenty-first century. \nDavid A. Banks is Lecturer and Director of Globalization Studies at the University at Albany\, a delegate to the Troy Area Labor Council\, and author of many essays on technology\, cities\, and politics which have appeared in The Baffler\, The Guardian\, Dwell Magazine\, and more. \n  \n$8\, free for members. No advanced tickets.

Whether you’re a seasoned Americana music enthusiast or just looking for a summer night out\, Howlin’ at the Moon at The Barn at Mabee Farm is the place to be! \nHowlin’ at the Moon is generously supported by Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation. \nJim Gaudet and the Railroad Boys believe that audience participation leads to a deeper and more meaningful connection. It is typical to hear the band’s audience enthusiastically whooping it up during songs\, and the RR Boy’s closeness with their listeners is obvious no matter where they perform. They consistently bridge the gap between themselves and their audience\, essentially creating one big “down home” family who’ve been brought together by their shared experience through Jim and The RR Boys’ songs and musical stories. The band supports Gaudet’s song writing and arrangements with just the right amount of gusto and drive. The group consists of Jim Gaudet\, guitar\, singer\, songwriter\, Bobby Ristau\, upright bass and backing vocals\, Sten Isachsen\, mandolin and backing vocals\, and either special guests Sara Milonovich or Tucker Callander\, on fiddle and backing vocals. \nAdmission is $10 at the door. Beer and wine available. Cash only.
