SUMMARY:Virtual Talk: "Skeletons in the Cabinet" with Andrew Beaupre
DESCRIPTION:This virtual program is part of our Winter Speaker Series\, and will be presented on Zoom. A Zoom link will be emailed to all SCHS members before the program. \n“Skeletons in the Cabinet: Memory and the Human Remains Attributed to the Schenectady Massacre of 1690s” with Andrew Beaupre \nThe Stockade’s story of the “massacre” has been venerated through first-hand accounts\, ballads\, memorials\, and even re-enactments. While this metanarrative is ever present\, the aftermath of the event remains buried under both the soil and political obfuscation. Beaupre will discuss the skeletal remains recovered in the neighborhood\, many of which have been falsely attributed to the massacre\, and examine the role of archaeology in collective historical memory.

SUMMARY:Theodore Burr's Two Early 19th Century Schenectady-Scotia Bridges: New Evidence with Ron Knapp
DESCRIPTION:This virtual program is part of our Winter Speaker Series\, and will be presented on Zoom. A Zoom link will be emailed to all SCHS members before the program. \nIn a richly illustrated presentation\, author Ron Knapp will discuss his new book\, “Theodore Burr and the Bridging of Early America.” In this important work on covered bridges\, Knapp explores Burr’s local creations: the Schenectady-Scotia bridges. Knapp will delve into a good deal of new information about Burr’s two local bridges\, filling in gaps in Schenectady history. During his lifetime\, Burr claimed to have built forty-five bridges — these however were not like the ordinary covered bridges commonly seen today that are identified with his patent\, but include some of the most challenging and superlative bridges in American history. But\, despite Burr’s herculean efforts\, part of his legacy sadly includes an obscure and ignominious demise in 1822 at the age of 51\, possibly by then penniless and without even an obituary lauding his work. He was buried in an unknown grave. Burr deserved better. Knapp’s work rectifies this. \nRon Knapp is the author\, editor\, or contributor of more than 20 books. He taught from 1968 through 2001 in the Department of Geography and Asian Studies Program at the State University of New York\, New Paltz\, where he holds the rank of SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus. Knapp enjoys hiking and ‘reading the landscape\,’ and since 1987\, he has served on the Board of of Mohonk Preserve\, New York’s largest not-for-profit nature preserve.

SUMMARY:Mainstream Radicalism: Labor Organizing in Schenectady 1886-1906
DESCRIPTION:This in-person program is part of our Winter Speaker Series\, and will be presented at Mabee Farm.  \nHistorian Catherine Haag’s 2023 dissertation explores the confluence of Schenectady’s Socialist history\,  local workers’ adoption of direct labor action practices at the point of production\, and the commitment of local labor leaders to industrial unionism to reveal how radicalism became mainstream among Schenectady’s workers.

SUMMARY:Virtual Talk: "Visualizing Equality: African American Rights and Visual Culture in the 19th Century"
DESCRIPTION:This virtual program is part of our Winter Speaker Series\, and will be presented on Zoom. A Zoom link will be emailed to all SCHS members before the program.  \nIn his recent work form University of North Carolina Press\, Professor Aston Gonzalez charts the changing roles of African American visual artists as they helped build the world they envisioned. The fight for racial equality in the 19th century played out not only in marches and political conventions\, but also in the print and visual culture created and disseminated by African Americans\, as Black artists produced images that advanced campaigns for equal rights. \nAston Gonzalez is Associate Professor of History at Salisbury University. He focuses on 19th century African American history\, politics\, visual culture\, and material culture\, using a broad variety of original documents to examine the complex histories of African American communities and activism. For the 2019-2020 academic year\, Gonzalez was a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow based at New York University where he finished his first book\, Visualizing Equality: African American Rights and Visual Culture in the Nineteenth Century\,  published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2020. Visualizing Equality was a finalist for two major book prizes. Other publications include: \n“Reading the Emancipation Proclamation’: Viewing Race and Freedom during the Civil War Era.” Civil War History 68\, no. 2 (June 2022): 194-209. \n“Claiming Space\, Bearing Witness: The Portraits of Early African American Ministers” in Jasmine Nichole Cobb\, ed.\, African American Literature in Transition\, 1750-2015: Volume 2\, 1800-1830 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press\, 2021): 288-315. \n“Stolen Looks\, People Unbound: Picturing Contraband People during the Civil War.” Slavery & Abolition 40\, no. 1 (2019): 28-60. \n“William Dorsey and the Construction of an African American History Archive.” Social Dynamics: A Journal of African Studies 45\, no. 1 (2019): 138-155. \n“Stealing Freedom: Robert Smalls and Modeling Citizenship” in Kathleen Diffley and Benjamin Fagan\, eds.\, Visions of Glory: The Civil War in Word and Image (Athens\, GA: University of Georgia Press\, 2019). \n“The Art of Racial Politics: The Work of Robert Douglass Jr.\, 1833-46.” Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography 138\, no. 1 (January 2014)\, 5-37.

SUMMARY:A Stockade Tea with Sylvie Briber
DESCRIPTION:We’re kicking off another great season of Stockade adventures with a very special springtime tea! Our good friend Sylvie Briber will be our host\, as she shares some of her favorite tales from the neighborhood. Sylvie’s heart was taken when she first stepped inside the Stockade while on a childhood school trip\, and her dream of living in the Stockade came true in 1995 when she moved to 23 Washington Avenue\, across from the Historical Society. Inspired by a mysterious inscription in her front window\, Sylvie began a research journey at the SCHS library\, uncovering some delightful anecdotes. The result is her book\, “The Inscription in the Window.” \nThis program is free\, however registration is required as space is very limited. We cannot accept walk-ins for this program.

SUMMARY:Chris Thomas and his Smoke Dancers: A Haudenosaunee Social Dance
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exhilarating look at Haudenosaunee history and culture through the grace and symbolism of traditional dance. \nHighlighted by lightning footwork that seems to float on air\, the Smoke Dance of the Haudenosaunee Nation is the most dynamic and popular competition dance at powwows across the Northeast. Onondaga artist Chris Thomas is one of this generation’s most celebrated smoke dancers\, recognized for the beauty and fluidity of his steps. He is also an inspiring educator who uses performance to teach about Haudenosaunee culture and history\, from the public schools to the festival stage. \nThe Haudenosaunee Confederacy is made up of the Onondaga\, Mohawk\, Oneida\, Cayuga\, Seneca\, and Tuscarora nations in what is now central and Upstate New York. In pre-colonial times\, these nations forged a powerful sociopolitical alliance based upon a prophetic agreement called Great Law of Peace; their confederacy later served as a major inspiration for the authors of the U.S. Constitution. While European colonizers called them Iroquois\, their own name is Haudenosaunee\, which means “People of the Longhouse.” \nJust as the longhouse dwelling has a public face and a private interior\, Haudenosaunee dance has both public and private forms. The ceremonial dances have spiritual significance\, and thus are reserved for members of the tribal community. However celebratory “social” dances\, like the Rabbit and Old Moccasin dances\, have always been performed for and even with guests in public settings with the accompaniment of singing and drumming. Many of these social dances have\, in turn\, developed competition forms. The Smoke Dance is a newer\, competition dance that evolved in the mid-20th century. Some say its swooping arm movements mimic clearing out smoke from the longhouse. Others believe it is rooted in the ceremonial War Dance\, performed over a steadily intensifying drumbeat to challenge the spinning dancers. \nChris Thomas was introduced to the power of dance in the most traditional of ways: he remembers the joy he felt as a young child\, walking with his aunt\, Eileen Thomas\, down the road to the Onondaga longhouse\, where he would be mesmerized by the dancers’ footwork. When he was a teenager\, his stepfather Bill Crouse brought him to weekend shows and powwows\, where Thomas began to make a name for himself as a competition dancer. Crouse\, who is Seneca\, also taught Thomas to sing; to this day many of the songs he presents are in Seneca\, which is closely related to his mother tongue\, Onondaga. \nAs Thomas points out now\, traditional Haudenosaunee dance isn’t taught\, and children are never pressured to join in. Each aspiring dancer learns by watching and participating\, eventually building their own style within the dynamic framework of traditional dance vocabulary\, costume\, and singing. Chris Thomas & His Smoke Dancers are a multigenerational ensemble featuring talented performers at varying points in this journey\, from Thomas’s 10-year-old daughter Awksanah to his longtime friend Wesley Halsey\, a powerful singer and dancer with a wealth of knowledge of Haudenosaunee history and tradition. All aspects of the dance are culturally and artistically linked\, with the performers and their families making their own dance regalia\, rattles\, and drums. Together they present an exhilarating introduction to Haudenosaunee history and culture through the grace and symbolism of traditional dance. \nThis event will be held outside\, so please dress accordingly and feel free to bring a chair or blanket. All ticket sales final. \nThis program is made possible by NYSCA\, New York State Council on the Arts. \n

SUMMARY:Howlin' at the Moon featuring The Mammals
DESCRIPTION:Howlin’ at the Moon showcases regional music from a variety of genres\, providing an authentic musical experience for both audience and musicians. Music traditions are meant to be fluid and evolving\, and Howlin’ nurtures regional musical talent while providing opportunities for cross-pollination. All in a 1760 Dutch Barn that inspires and reminds us of our place within history! \nWe’re kicking off the 16th season with a performance by The Mammals! The Mammals are folksingers Ruth Ungar\, Mike Merenda\, and a cohort of compelling collaborators who form a touring quintet on the fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, organ\, bass\, and drums. Over the past 20 years they have quietly composed a canon of original songs (“Some of the best songwriting of their generation.” -LA Times) that both reflect our culture and offer a vision of how the world might yet be. “These days we sing about what we’re for over what we’re against\,” says songwriter\, Mike Merenda\, and what they’re for is “nothing short of sublime” according to Americana UK. \nA rough and tumble decade in the 00’s forged The Mammals identity as “subversive acoustic traditionalists” (Boston Globe) or a “party band with a conscience.” Re-emerging in 2017 from a hibernation period during-which the band’s founders explored new songwriting terrain\, The Mammals “don’t suffer from multiple genre syndrome\, they celebrate it as if gleefully aware that the sound barriers separating old-timey music\, vintage pop and contemporary folk are as permeable as cotton” (Washington Post). Their latest album\, Nonet\, “marshalls the defiant spirit needed to heal a damaged world” (No Depression). In 2023 they released a series of singles recorded at their own Humble Abode Music\, as well as issuing bonus material from 2020’s landmark album Nonet. \nRuth is the daughter of legendary fiddler\, Jay Ungar\, composer of the storied “Ashokan Farewell.” You can catch The Mammals semi-annually at The Hoot\, a folk festival they curate and produce at The Ashokan Center in Olivebridge\, NY. \nOpening the night is host Everest Rising\, a tightly-knit quintet influenced by bluegrass\, Americana\, rock\, jazz and more. Together they create progressive acoustic music that is unique\, powerful\, and comfortably familiar. With a wide dynamic range\, Everest Rising’s material spans from heartfelt laments to all out jams\, all executed with instrumental finesse and thoughtful story-telling. As this summer’s host of the Howlin’ at the Moon Concert Series\, Everest Rising aims to support an authentic musical experience for both audience and musicians. \nAdmission is $10 at the door (cash only). Beer and wine available for purchase.
