Mid-century Modern is an American design movement influential in interior, graphic, and product design, and especially, in architecture. With origins in the International and Bauhaus movements, Mid-century Modernism was manifested locally by the architectural firm of Feibes & Schmitt. On this tour of downtown Schenectady, we will visit five government buildings that Feibes & Schmitt designed, including the award-winning Karen B. Johnson Public Library. We’ll also discuss this significant design movement with a historic preservationist. Much of the information on this tour comes from Paul Turner, an architectural historian scholar, and lifelong friend and mentee of Jim Schmitt and Werner Feibes.  This event is co-sponsored by the Schenectady Heritage Foundation.

This is a 2.3 mile walking tour lasting approximately one hour. The tour meets at MiSci, 15 Museum Dr, Schenectady, NY 12308. There is public parking available throughout downtown.
